Potassium Sulphate (SOP)

A chloride-free, water-soluble source of potassium and sulphur.

Also known as: SOP, sulphate of potash, potassium sulfate

Young plants between drip irrigation lines in a field

Overview

Potassium sulphate (K₂SO₄) is a high-purity, white crystalline inorganic compound produced by the controlled reaction of potassium salts with sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄). It has one of the highest potassium contents among chloride-free fertilisers and is also a valuable source of sulphur. Being fully water-soluble, it is taken up rapidly by the plant; by regulating osmoregulation (water balance), turgor pressure and stomatal movement, it improves tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought and frost. It strengthens root development, chlorophyll synthesis and mechanical resistance to disease, and helps prevent deficiency-related physiological disorders such as puffiness in tomatoes, misshapen fruit in cucumbers and calyx splitting in ornamentals.

Applications

  • Fertigation via drip and sprinkler irrigation
  • Foliar feeding with sprayers
  • Open-field and greenhouse cultivation
  • Fruit growing (especially bananas, citrus and stone fruit)
  • Ornamental horticulture
  • Late-season quality fertiliser that improves taste, aroma, colour and shelf life
